How Can Brugada Syndrome Be Avoided In The Next Pregnancy?

my husband has brugada syndrom we al ready have a son who fortunatelly does not have the syndrome. We are thinking of having another baby but we know that there is a possibility of 50% of having the syndrom. We al ready had a genetic test but without any result. The test that our son had was asmalin test done in belgium by Doct. Brugada. Can we have any advise as we would like to have a baby with the less risk. I would like to add that we are comming from an island of Greece and it also worries us that doctors are not familiar with the syndrom. Thank you

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,

Prior to becoming pregnant a second time, I suggest to you that you speak with a pediatrician who specializes in genetics about your history. This genetics specialist can recommend to you an OB-GYN physician who is experienced and comfortable giving care to a woman whose baby might have a genetic disorder.

In fact the genetics doctor and OB-GYN doctor can work together to care for you. During the early weeks of your pregnancy, the OB-GYN doctor can put a needle through your abdomen and then through your uterus and withdraw some of the amniotic fetus that surrounds the baby. This fluid contains cells from the baby.

In the laboratory these cells can be opened and the genetic material inside can be studied to look for the genetic material of Brugada syndrome.

This way you and your husband will know if your second infant has Brugada syndrome before it is born.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You already know quite a bit about Brugada's syndrome.

Before you become pregnant again, I suggest that you and your husband have an appointment with a pediatric medical doctor who is a geneticist and take with you all of the pertinent medical records.

Perhaps the geneticist will be able to recommend an OB physician who specializes in high-risk pregnancies or has much experience caring for women with high-risk pregnancies.

Frequently geneticists care for patients along with OB. Make an appointment and you and your husband go to meet the OB doctor, also.

I hope you will become comfortable with these doctors and they will come to know you well.

Early in your next pregnancy you can discuss with both doctors the positives and negatives of having the OB physician perform an amniocentesis.

He would pass a sterile needle through your abdomen and through your uterus to enter the amniotic cavity.

Then he will withdraw a small amount of amniotic fluid. He/she does not harm your fetus.

This fluid contains cells from the baby that are floating in the fluid. In the laboratory, the cells are removed from the fluid.

Using the microscope the technician breaks open the cells and removes the genetic material inside.

Next, this material is carefully examined to look for any of the changes that are associated with Brugada's. If none are found, then your second child will also be free from Brugada's syndrome.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
