How Can I Heal The Hole That Post Existed After An Arthroscopic Surgery?
i sustained an injury to my articular cartilage. I had arthroscopic surgery and the surgeon found a hole tht he couldnt repair. He states that it will probably heal in 2 -3 years (scar tissue formation). i am looking for a PM &R osteopathic physician to help alleviate the pain upon movement that also accepts workman s comp. Can you assist?
The hole that you are talking about is a defect in the articular cartilage of the joint.
Your doctor is right when he says that it will never hesl on its own. Only small defects (upto about 1.5 cm diameter) heal with scar tissue formation provided microfracture technique is done during the arthrosvopy. It takes around 3 to 6 weeks to form.
A defect larger than that would require a procedure called Mosaicplasty....in which cartilage from ones own knee is taken out and transplanted in the defect.
Very large defects require ACT (Autologous cartilage transplant).
Kindly consult your orthopedician about the size of defect and the details of the above procedures.
I hope my advice has helped. Good luck
