How Can Insomnia With Rapid Heartbeats Be Treated?

I've had insomnia on and off for 11 years. I am a 33-year-old womam who's had anxiety her whole life. In the last two years, I wake up with a rapid heartbeat and a tremendous strain in my eyes - as if my eyes have been darting around all night. I am exhausted. I could sleep for 12 hours, but when I wake up like this, I am useless. My head often hurts, my eyes are watery and I am fatigued. I'm at a loss of what to do. Any advice? It feels like insomnia of some kind, but I am not aware of being "up" during the night. Thank you for your help.

A long battle with insomnia is very distressing. It is most commonly known to be secondary to other stressful factors in life. As you have mentioned, you sound like someone who tends to get tensed and feels stressed out easily, which often means, having high level of adrenaline in your body. An anxious persona with a non-refreshing sleep strains the body causing compensatory rise in the adrenaline levels and hence the rapid pulse.
The headache, watery eyes and fatigue are all signs of lack of rest to the body and mind.

In order to be able to make a diagnosis and suggest treatment options, I would want to know a few more things about your problem:
1. How is your mood most of the time, in most days of the week?
2. Do you have any complaints like getting tired easily, losing interest in your work or your routine, not eating properly, feeling worthless or crying spells?
3. Have you tried medication for this problem? If yes, which one and for how long?
4. Do you have any dreams? Can you remember them?
