How Can Pruritus Ani Causing Itching Be Treated?

i was diagnosed with pruritus ani several years ago, and despite being very conscious to avoid itching 'down there' and applying steriod creams and even jock itch creams (all at the recommendations of my proctologist) the itching sensation has progressively gotten worse! I literally feel like I am going to jump out of my skin if I do not itch my anus and feel like there is something more internally that I'll never 'satisfy' if that makes sense. I really want to get over this itching and scratching business asap and lead a normal life!

Hello,

Possible causes are:
1. Heat
2. Wool
3. Moisture or wetness around the anus. It may be caused by sweating, or by incomplete drying of that area after washing. It may also be caused by leaking urine (incontinence).
4. Stools (feces) being in contact with the skin around the anus. It can be due to the leaking of stools out of the anus, or due to incomplete cleaning after opening your bowels.
5. Stress and anxiety.
6. Parasites like pinworm infection etcetera.
Until examination is done, it is difficult to say what it is. Treating the causative rather than simply applying creams. Please consult your physician/gastroenterologist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
