How Can Under Active Thyroid Be Treated?

Hi,I am 25 and live in the UK. I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid in 2007 and have been taking 75mg of levothyroxine for the past few years.3 months ago I started taking the combined oral contraception pill. Before taking the pill my TSH was 1.4 after taking the pill my TSH has increased to 7.48 in three months. My T4 is also below the normal range.Despite running 5km every morning during October and November and eating a very healthy diet I lost hardly any weight. Now I hardly have the energy to move, I find myself falling asleep at my desk and even while driving. I have a constant headache, my head feels like a pressure pot. The last time I had a good nights rest was over a month ago. I feel unbelievably tired in the morning. My the afternoon I am so tired I just want to get to my bed.
My hair is falling out so much, even my eyebrow hairs fall out.
Often I have a heavy feeling in my throat, my muscle ache so much it stops me from sleeping. I get cramps in my legs when I try to stretch, I occasionaly cramps in my hands from washing dishes and typing on a keyboard. My eyes are so puffy in the morning. I cry for no reason, I feel miserable often, and feel like I hate myself and the way I look, I feel sick when I look in the mirror. Although my BMI is normal, I worked so hard to lose the excess weight last time, and now I have put on 6kg in less then 3 weeks.

I had read that the oestrogen in the pill can stop absorbtion of thyroxine. I always take my thyroxine pills first thing in the morning, and the contraceptive pill 12 hours later.

I don't know what the best course of action is for me. I am at my best when my TSH is between 0.5 and 1. I just want to go back to normal. What should I do?

Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
You have under active thyroid and you were treated for thyroid replacement.
Your symptoms of tiredness, sleepy feeling, weight gain, hair loss, muscle cramps all are due to hypothyroidism.

Because you start OC pills and it affect the levothyroxine. There is complex interaction between levothyroxin and OC pills.

So ultimately it decrease the effect of levothyroxine and you feel symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Just inform your doctor about OC pills and you just need to increase the dosage of levothyroxin. Monitor your TSH level and set the dosage of levothyroxin accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.
