Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Does Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo Effect Blood Viscosity?
How does Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo effect blood viscosity? I m insulin resistant, and I keep track of my blood sugar levels periodically after meals and fasting just to make sure everything is copacetic. Last night, when I pricked my finger, I noticed my blood was very thin. I couldn t get a well formed drop. It was runny like water. I would like to know how the birth control could contribute to this effect. It s odd to me because birth control pills are associated with clotting.... Appreciate your insight!
The study has shown increased blood viscosity and hematocrit in healthy women taking OCs.
Thus thromboembolic events in women taking OCs could be a result of a drop in the rate of blood flow which at the lower shear rates could increase red cell aggregation and clotting.
Please contact your health provider which could use this indicator to monitor you who have used Ortho Tri-cyclen LO over a considerable period for thrombotic risks to determine if OC use should continue. Contact your clinician immediately.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
