Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am going for arthroscopic surgery on the 30th of June to repair the labrum on my right shoulder. The last time I smoked Marijuana was 2-3 days ago and I was wondering how long from now until the surgery should I stop smoking so there is no complications with the anethesia. I had my pre-op testing today and everything was in good order physically (blood pressure, EKG, blood test etc). I usually smoke once a day at night but I am very active cardio and weightlifting wise.
If marijuana were a serious toxicity, you would have heard about it more. Up to 1 in six people experience significant asthma symptoms with smoking marijuana. This is while they are smoking and it goes away rapidly when they are not. In cigarettes, there is worse lung function WHILE smoking. Otherwise, the effects from smoking do not reverse quickly at all. In cigarettes it is months after quitting before significant healing occurs. Best is strengthening the diaphram with incentive spirometry which will have some improvement in 2 weeks in breathing ability. Information on how long marijuana is in the body, other long term effects of it would be a different question; obtainable with a premium direct question.
