How Long The BP Medicine To Be Used?

Hi, My father is aged 56 and he is hypertensive. He was using the antihypertensive medication for the last 6 years and it the BP is well under control around 120/35. It was also confirmed by his physician. He was not ready to take him off the medication. Whenever my father asks about it the doctor says Not now, don’t worry about it I shall listen to you when the time come. Can anyone tell me how long the antihypertensives are used if the BP is brought under control?

it’s nice to hear that your father’s BP is under control. I am aged 49 and I happen to use the medications for BP for last 3 years and it was under control till recently and my doctor reduced the dose to half. I was also very happy for that measure but I found the BP increased right now and rushed to the doctor immediately, he told that the BP shall rise for small time as he had reduced the dose of medication.

Hi Roshin. BP medicines are supposed to be taken forever even after BP is under control. It is because of the medicines that your father's BP is under control. Listen to your doctor and do not discontinue medicines. I think u meant BP is 120/ 85 not 120/ 35, right?

sad to say, the treatment is lifelong. once your are hypertensive need to a take tablets life long. other wise your pressure will shoot up and you will have compliations like heat attack, kidney disease or stroke. its better to avoid these complications. so one tablet per day life long is not an isuue.

I browsed to find the cause of increase in the BP though I am on medication and could not find much info about it. I only concluded myself that to continue with the medication and usual diet and routine exercise for time being. I remember a doctor friend of mine used to say “yaar ek bar BP ki goli khaya to yoon samjo ki jindagi bhar lena hai” (BP medication once started should be continued for life)
