How Long Will The Pain In Thumb Caused Due To Sprain Remain?
My 13 year old son sprained his thumb playing hockey 1 week ago. He still has some pain when he tries to hold the stick. We are wondering how long it may be before he can play without pain and if it is common for a mildly sprained thumb to be uncomfortable for several weeks. We re afraid that he could injure it further if he doesn t get the rest he needs. The coach seems to think he should be able to just tape it.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. Sprains and strains are two types of soft tissue injury or damage. A sprain is a joint injury that involves tearing of the ligaments and joint capsule. A strain is an injury to muscle or tendons. First aid includes rest, ice, compression with bandages and elevation (RICE). Soft tissue injuries may be sudden (acute) or get worse gradually (chronic). They can take between two and 12 weeks to heal, depending on the injury, initial and ongoing treatment, and the age and general health of the person. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
