How Safe Is Mirena To Manage Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB)?

Hi, i have D.U.B: disfunctional uteral bleeding with heavy periods every 2.5-3wks lasting round 7 days. it had caused postural drops with my BP due to fluid loss. my symptoms when i get my periods are, hot flushes, nausia, cramps, back aches and dizziness. i have had many bllod tests and they all come back perfect inc hormones. my dr has suggested mirena, however i have only heard bad things about it. Is it worth giving it a go in my situation or is there a better solution? i am 33yrs and have 2 children. i have had a LETS procedure 3 yrs ago and my mother had cervical cancer and andrmetrosis. any advice would be much appreciated. thankyou.... Hello and thanks for choosing HCM,

I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.

Mirena is useful in controlling symptoms of DUB in many cases. It is impregnated with hormones that are released locally inside the uterus. So the side effects of hormones like nausea, vomiting daily intake etc are all avoided. At the same time it delivers higher concentration of the drug at the local level in the uterus making it effective.

However it is not effective in 100% cases meaning some women may not respond. But this is not predictable. You may also try using tablet meprate twice daily for a 7-10 days beginning from day 15 of the cycle if you do not want to use mirena after consulting your health care provider. The pills must be taken diligently as if they are missed periods become more irregular.

Other solution is an endometrial ablation procedure where the endometrium is destroyed using heat. It is only used in women who do not ever want to become pregnant again. It also causes discharge for some days and again not 100% successful in every women.

Please discuss this with your doctor and choose he best option.

Hope this was helpful.
Thanks for using HCM.
Have a good day.
