How To Deal With Episodes Lasting Up To 20 Minutes Of Extreme Lack Of Energy?

I am a physician - my 97year old mother has episodes lasting up to 20 minutes of extreme lack of energy to the point of inability to carry on a conversation and the need to rock her body back and forth. We have been unable to relate the episodes to a change in heart rhythm (she has chronic atril fib and we have tried Holter monitors), use of medications or any other precipitating factors. Any ideas?

Hi There,
Twenty minutes could certainly be a timeframe for seizure activity - Complex partial seizures can impair consciousness and involve automatic movements and lake of responsiveness. She may be on a new medication that lowers seizure threshold or perhaps some small infarct has created a node? I would also "DEFG" (don't ever forget glucose) hypoglycemia can present with agitation and altered mental state. Other possibility is a hypotensive episode due to carcinoid - is she flushed?
Well, these are just a few thoughts...
Hope you get to the bottom of it.
