How To Get Rid Of Recurring Bile Duct And Gall Bladder Stones?

I had a ERCP for removal of bile duct stones followed by removal of gall bladder having a stone. After 6 weeks the inserted stent was removed by a 2nd ERCP.After 15 days I began to have severe pains in the abdomen.Another ERCP was done for removal of sludge/particles from the CBD and again a stent has been put in.The doctor says I hae a lithogenic bile. How can I get rid of recurring stones & ERCP to lead a healthy life?

hello,

there are a few things which can be done. First of all , it is not that unusual that patients suffer again even after cholecystectomy and ERCP. It's called post-cholecystectomy syndrome. This means some patients still feel pain like with gall stones due to the fact that the main bile duct might slightly dilatete and becomes a kind of reservoir so that the bile will stay longer. in the bile duct, becomes thicker and causes pain.

So things to do.

1) stay with a low fat diet. The less fat you eat, the less bile you normally will produce in the liver, the lesser chance to get thicker bile and sludge.

2) when an ERCP is done , a papillotomy should have been performed. This is a cut in muscle of the sphincter of the bile duct so it will stay open to prevent that bile might accumulate in the bile duct and causes Problems.

3) Sometimes it might be useful to give medicine like Ursofalk (= Ursodeoxychol acid). This can make the bile more liquid

If the pain continues I suggest you contact your gastroenterologist again.

Hope I could help you.
