How To Reduce Weight And Regain The Lost Energy And Bowl Regularity After Taking Diltiazem, Thyroid Medicine And Propaphenone?

My Dr. took me off Digoxine and put me on Diltiazem. I also take Thyroid and Propaphenone for tacchycardia. 4 months on new rx and have gained 10 pounds and lost my quick wit, high energy and bowl regularity. 60 yo white female. My question is could the ca2+ channel blocker effect the smooth muscles of digestive tract, and what can I do to regain regularity? Recently I have taken stool softeners but that is not a long term option. Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Calcium channel blockers do not cause low gut motility.

Your symptoms, particularly, rapid weight gain and constipation/irregular bowel movements, are suggestive of under-corrected thyroid problem. Once Thyroxin dose is increased adequately, your problems will ease.

The dose of Thyroxin is titrated so as to maintain TSH level to 1 or less.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe modified treatment as advised.
