How To Switch Back To Medicine From Insulin?
I'm currently on two types of insulin:
Novolog 10 units with each meal plus sliding scale: 2 extra units for every 50 above 140.
Plus Lantus 23 units each night at bedtime plus1 unit extra each night if blood sugars are above 140 fasting.
I'm 53 years old and I would like to know about switching back to a pill.
I can't take metformon because it cause swelling.....?
I didn't know there was going to be a fee,

Hi,
Your history suggests that you are having type II DM and you were on oral hypoglycemic drug n shifted 43 IU of shorter n longer acting insulin per day.
Human insulin is synthesized in our body by beta cells n travels though blood and act at site by mobilizing sugar from blood to sites. insulin if enters externally in stomach then it is digested n hence cannot work orally.
OHA like sulfonylureas , biguanide , meglitinide , thiazolidinediones derivatives increases insulin section indirectly through different mechanisms. But gradually there is resistance to these drugs develops either due to beta cell destrution or receptor defect/decrease or other mechanisms. Some people develops side effects to theses drugs. Hence these drugs are no longer appropriate in these situations .
Now in your case u developed side effect for biguanide and probably other drugs are also not that much effective in controlling your blood sugar level so you are switched to insulin which is def painful but unfortunately best for you( implant n pumps not suitable as irregular BS level)
you again need to be under regular follow up with you doc get iron n eye check up every 6months n take care of ur extrimity .
