How To Treat Chronic Constipation That Requires Stool Softeners?

For some time now I have been bothered with constipation. I have a big bulge that forms at the top of my stomach. I have to stop eating and take laxatives or stool softened to empty myself, which usually follows nausea. But I have found that I can no longer vomit, just gag. And if by chance something does come up, it seems as if it may choke me. It just refuses to come up. And I used to be able to vomit who no problem when I would be sick.
