How To Treat My Daughter S Acne?

My daughter is a beautiful extremely intelligent girl attending the university of michigan. She has had persistent bumpy acne for years now (not cystic) she does not want to take accutane because she is worried about long term affects. I feel this acne is bringing her down socially. She is doing cancer research but she can t seem to help herself. She limits her sweets, does not do any caffeine and tries to exercise regularly. Over the counter benzoyl peroxide does not help. Pro active helped for a bit and then stopped. Antibiotics stopped working. My heart is breaking for her. She is an amazing person but this has been such a struggle.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I empathise with her problem and I can understand your concern and frustration over her acne. However, it is not unusual to develop acne at young age. Hormonal imbalances, sweating, humidity, cosmetics, stress etc may play a role in acne flare.

Topical treatment of acne mainly centers around topical antibacterials, benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids. Topical retinoids are comedolytic thereby preventing new acne.

Oral antibiotics like doxycycline or azithromycin can be very useful if she has inflammatory acne(papules and pustules).

She could also take a few peeling sessions e.g salicylic acid peels, from a dermatologist. Salicylic acid peels are mainly for acne though it also helps to lighten post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Therefore I would suggest that you seek an appointment with a dermatologist and discuss the most appropriate approach for her acne.
