How To Treat Severe Hip And Arm Pain Due To A Injury?

My dead fell about 12ft from a ladder a few days ago and shattered his right arm and fractured his hip at several points. He was fully aware of what happened, showed no signs of a concussion but was in horrible pains. He was flown to the hospital so they wanted to give him a general anesthesia because pain killers didn't work. They kept him asleep for a day. When they wanted to wake him up he was shaking too much and they couldn't proceed. He also didn't start breathing by himself. The doctor said that this is not normal. We are very worried about that, of course. The following day they tried it again and it was the same thing. They said that he "gave the signal to the lung to start breathing" but he still needed the machine. He showed some reaction (turned his head) when my mom talked to him but he didn't wake up. They again but him to sleep then. His pupils and vital signs are fine but he "is in a different world" they say. I'm not a doctor but if he shakes at least he wants to wake up, right? Maybe he just needed more time to wake up some more? When a doctor tells you that "something is not normal" and they can't explain it or they never had a case like this before you're very concerned, of course.
