Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband takes Vytorin and has for years. Now his total cholesterol is 106 and is bad is 35. His Dr. says don t stop taking the medicine. I have researched and I think Vytorin is dangerous medicine especially when it s not needed anymore. I understand that stopping abruptly isn t a good idea but should I be worried if he does it slowly? Like one ever other day for a couple weeks and then may every 3 days an so on.
Vytorin is composed of ezetimibe and simvastatin. Ezetimibe is a selective inhibitor of intestinal cholesterol and related phytosterol absorption, and simvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.
It is not advisable to stop this medication following significant reductions in the cholesterol levels. However, the dosage can be lowered depending on the response to therapy and its intake needs to be continued.
Also, along with its intake, diet and exercise need to be continued as well.
Kindly consult your doctor for appropriate dose adjustments and do the necessary follow-up as suggested.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
