I Still Feel Anxious About My Heart, What Is Wrong With Me ?

Why am I still afraid of having a heart attack, even though I've been to several doctors? I m a 25 year old grad student and I know my risk factors for a heart attack are low, plus I ve been to several doctors in the past week, including my family physician, who have told me that I have a stomach condition like gastritis or acid reflux. I ve even been to the Emergency Room and had an EKG and blood test and I still feel anxious about my heart! What is wrong with me?

Actually someone may have suggested to you that you may have heart problems, You have gone through the tests and nothing has showed up. If there was a problem believe me you would have been notified or admitted to the hospital from the emergency room. Now you are dealing with a little anxiety, better address this problem before it starts ballooning into full scale panic attacks. Trust in the doctors diagnosis, If you still are not convinced get a second opinion, make sure you also submit all your lab work and tests so the new doctor has something to work with. Just kick back smile and say to yourself It wasn't a heart attack or I wouldn't be sitting here right now.

Hi, I feel u have anxiety disorder in which the individual has sensation of heart beating fast (palpitation) which is actually not because of problem in heart but chemical imbalance in mind. Because of this chemical imbalance, the individual starts perceiving mild palpitaion (or other associated symptoms : sweating, tremor, choking sensation etc.) as life threatening and rushes to emergency. This is called panic attack and usually last at peak for few minutes. After subsidence of this attack, even if no palpitation is there, still the individual anticipates that tha panic attack might come again and this keep him always anxious, nervous and fearfull. When this happens repeatedly, it is called panic disorder. Consulting psychiatrist will help. Medications needed if severe and if causes decreased potential. or else, cognitive therapy will be helpfull. U can contact me at susanta.pgi30@yahoo.in, if u wish to.

It is natural for a person to worry about chest pain as it arouses the worst fear known to man, the fear of death. The fear is based on the misconception that any problem in the heart is indicative of a "heart attack".

Non specific chest pain (in the absence of any positive tests) is a common symptom of anxiety. Other symptoms like palpitations (feeling one's own heart beat), breathing difficulties, sweating, trembling and heavyness of head may also accompany chest pain. Consult a psychiatrist for detailed evaluation and proper treatment which will help you overcome your doubts and problems. Remember that mind and body are inseperable (recall the palpitations you might have had during stressful exams)
