IV Inserted In Hand, Could Not Be Inserted In Vein, Raised Purple Lump, Painful. Advise?
I had an IV inserted in the top of my hand 8 days ago to administer sedation for a procedure. Well the nurse had to remove it as it didn't go into vein. Today I have a raised purple lump, that is painful to touch, where she inserted the IV cath. It was fine yesterday, just popped up this morning. What does this sound like and what should I do to treat if necessary? Thank you.
Hi, I understand either one might have happened 8 days back. 1) IV cannula was inserted wrongly and the drug didn't pass into the vein, so the cannula was removed, and some leakage of medicine outside the vein leading to a small bulge at the time of the injection itself. 2) Sometime IV cannula may be difficult to insert, After several attempts the cannula was removed. In the 1st instance because of wrong position (the cannula outside the vein) In the 2nd instance multiple punctures were made Whatever may be the reason some inflammatory changes may occur at the site of puncture. With antibiotic, anti inflammatory and application glycerine (IG) to reduce the edema you will be alright. If you keep your arm little elevated the edema will subside soon. Best wishes
