Hi and thanks for the query,
diarrheoa in a child needs of this age should be carefully evaluated and treated appropriately. Untreated, dehydration and malnutrition could set in at anytime to complicate the clinical picture. Its important to know if you have changed her diet lately, if the materials used in case of artificial feeding are properly cleaned, if the mixture is dine properly. Any accompanying signs and symptoms like fever and the child s general outlook are important to be considered.
Rashes around the vaginal area could be due to an irritation either due to excess diarrheaol fluid or urine, if allowed for a long time with the napkins not being changed. the quality of these napkins could be an important aspect to be considered.
Orah rehydration salt is the therapy of first choice in the management of diarrhea in children to avoid dehydration. However, my advice is you consult your pediatrician for a proper clinical evaluation and blood and stool tests to exclude anything serious.
Thanks and best regards,

Hi Jasbir.
thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Continuous diarrhea in a five month old baby needs immediate medical attention and you should consult your treating Dr immediately. The most common causes for infant diarrhea are Lactose intolerance or infections like Rota virus, amoebisis or giardiasis. Infectious diarrhea is usually painful and severe. Stool test will confirm the diagnosis.

Look for signs of dehydration like dry and sunken eyes, reduced urine, fatigue and irritability. Give electrolyte solution like Paedialyte every 4 to 6 hours. Do not stop breast milk if it is infective diarrhea. If you have started solid food then give bland diet like rice gruel, bread and banana. Anti amoebic drugs will cure amoebiasis and giardiasis. Rota virus infection is usually self limiting.

Your daughter is having persistent diarrhea. Watery diarrhea for more than 10 days is called persistent diarrhea. This is most commonly due to Lactose intolerance Please check if diarrhea is due to milk. Stool pH will be less than 5.5 due to the presence of un absorbed lactose indicating lactose malabsorption. Lactose free formula that is available commercially which contains soya will be useful.

Napkin rash, the rash you are talking about can occur due to infection or due to the harsh detergents used to wash the napkins. Keep the area dry and use soft napkins. Zinc oxide cream or Hydrocortisone ointment may be useful. Your treating Dr will know about these preparations.

I hope this is useful to you.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
Monitor for signs of dehydration.
They include
1. Decreased skin turgor
2. Increasing thirst.
3. Sunken eyes.
4. Irritability.
5. Drowsiness.
6. Decreasing passage of urine.
Oral rehydration solution or any other solution containing salt and sugar should be given.
Probiotics and Zinc prescribed by your doctor will be useful.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi Jasbir.
Thanks for writing to us.
Your baby is having diarrhea which is mostly viral in nature and settles in few days.
Most important is to maintain proper hydration.
Continue with breast feeding.Give oral rehydration solution sip by sip after each loose stool.
Give lactobacillus for 2 to 3 days and zinc for 14 days.
After passing stools area should be wiped from front to back so as to avoid contamination of any fecal matter.

In case symptoms persist get her evaluated by pediatrician for proper management.
She may need urine routine examination and culture,

Wishing your baby good health.
God bless..
