Infant With Croup, Harsh Raspy Breathing With Wheezing, Tachypneic, Substernal And Subcostal Retractions. Will This Need Immediate Attention?
I have an 11 1/2 month old who has been battling croup for the last 8 days. He no longer has stridor, but has developed very harsh, raspy breathing with inspiratory wheezing. He is tachypneic with a respiratory rate of approximately 50, occasionally seeing 60's. He also has mild substernal and subcostal retractions. He has been very irritable and lethargic most of the day, perking up a little tonight. What are your thoughts? I gave him an albuterol treatment which offered little relief. Can this wait until morning?
Hi, Thanks and welcome to HCM. the symptoms suggest acute lower respiratory tract infection, most probably pneumonia. he needs thorough investigation including x-ray chest. better consult a pediatrician and confirm or exclude pneumonia. hope this answer serves your purpose . I shall be happy to answer any more queries. Take care. Dr.M.V.Subrahmanyam.
