Is Flovent Inhaler Safe For Cough Treatment In A 2 Months Old?

My 11 month old has had a cough, from what we can remember since he was about 2 months. It sounds congested. His Dr. has taken an ex-ray and blood work and said it is a viral infection. Before this he gave him an antibiotic for 10 days and when did not clear gave again. After that we said no more and that is when he ordered the ex-ray and blood work. Before any of this he put him on a Fluticasone propionate 44 mcg inhaler (Flovent). He is tiny for his age group even though he seems always to be hungry and ready to eat and eats a lot. He also has a constant runny nose which is clear except for early morning. I am concerned the inhaler may be doing more harm than good. I read some of the side effects are slow weight gain, runny nose and cough. Please advise. Thank you.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi

I would like to know the history in detail.
Do you mean that the cough never subsided since 2 months of age? Or it comes and goes? If so how does each episode start? Is it like it starts with a runny nose and then goes to the chest? Are all episodes free of fever?
Is there any family history of allergy or asthma?
Does your baby have eczema of the skin?
Did your baby get any bronchodilators like Asthalin/ Levolin/ Bricanyl etc- If so did the cough subside after that?
How is the response to Flovent?
Were the X rays normal?

If he gets very frequent episodes of cough, the cough usually more in the early morning or night, if it is associated with vomiting after cough, if there is someone in the family with allergy/ asthma/ eczema, if your baby too has eczema, then it is likely that the problem is Allergic Bronchitis.
In such a case, your baby would have responded to bronchodilators I have mentioned above. Then medications like Flovent will surely help. Inhaled steroids given through spacer and mask for specified duration (minimum of 3 months, usually given for 6 months to 1 year) will benefit more in cases of Allergic Bronchitis. You need not be bothered about the side effects which are usually seen when given for years together.

But if the history does not fit into Allergic Bronchitis, one has to get other things ruled out like Gastro Esophageal Reflux etc and a detailed look into the history, weight gain, blood, x ray chest etc.

Hope this answers your query.
If you need further clarifications, please do not hesitate to get back with all the details.
Best wishes.
