Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.

As you mentioned that your daughter is suffering from a bad stomachache and was seen in the ER and told to have constipation.

I would like to know if she always has suffered from constipation since she was a baby. How frequently does she have a bowel movement.
If you have tried any medications for the same. When she was born did she have her first stool in the first 48 hrs of her being born?

In some children, if this problem of severe constipation has been present since they were a little baby, then they need to be evaluated for some underlying conditions that may lead to constipation for which she should consult a gastroenterologist.

Most children though suffer from constipation due to their poor diet and behavioral issues. Once constipated it gets painful for them to defecate and then they start avoiding using the restroom and this becomes a vicious cycle.

Some things to try if you haven't already done these:
1. She needs to drink plenty of plain water (unflavored) daily.
2. Encourage her to eat lots of fiber foods and fruits on a daily basis.
3. Avoid eating lot of cheese and lot of dairy products which can lead to constipation.
4. She will need cleansing of her system since she has been constipated for so long, discuss with your pediatrician about a cleanout with miralax followed by miralax or other laxative that your doctor may choose on a daily basis until she can have her daily bowel movements regularized.

I would suggest you see a specialist (gastroenterologist) if this is a long standing problem to rule out any underlying conditions and also to regularize her bowel movements.

Hope this has been helpful.
Best wishes.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
