Is Fighting In MMA Tournament Recommended While Having Low Pusle, Enlarged Heart And Abnormal MRI?
I have a friend who is planning on fighting in an MMA tournament this weekend. He was told that his pulse of 56 was low and that his heart was enlarged. Also, got an MRI today and was told it was abnormal and Dr. is going to talk to him tomorrow about it; But he could still plan to fight this weekend. He is kind of worried and asked me, an RN, if I had any thoughts on potentially what s going on with him from least case scenario to worst case scenario. I told him I would research a little and thought you would be a good start.
Hi welcome to hcm I understand your query and concern. Your friend s reports could be suggestive of Athletic heart syndrome which means low pulse rate and hypertrophy of heart secondary to exercise. It leads to Sinus bradycardia and normal cardiac output.Do not worry. He can continue with his tournament. He should get an ECG,2 D ECho,lipid profile, stress echo regularly for every 3-6months to rule out any arrhythmias and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is common in these type of case scenario.I advise your friend to avoid stress and anxiety.Restrict fatty foods and maintain blood pressure on a normal note.I advise your friend to take diet rich in fruits, vegetable salads, oats etc.please upload MRI of your friend to rule out any ischemic changes.Consult your cardiologist for expert management. Post your further queries if any, Thank you.
