I am inquiring about an allergy I think my dad (59 yrs old) has, but we can't pin point it and the Dermatologist that he is currently seeing has diagnosed it as Hives. The symptoms that he has almost 80% of the time are noticed when he wakes up in the morning. He has only been experiencing the problem maybe once a month or every couple of months for 5 years and just recently the problem seems to be happening weekly. What I noticed was that most of the "Hives" were happening from the shoulders up, but now it sometimes shows up in his fingertips and kneecaps. The symptoms include... His lips will swell up almost to the point that they might crack(at least 2 times their original size). One or the other, but never both lips at the same time. Two weeks ago he woke up and his eye was so swollen up that he could not open it. He says that it hurt to touch but doesn't ache. Also...his fingertips will swell up and itch and just last night his knee cap was very swollen almost like he hit it. After this happens, it usually takes the entire day for the swelling to go down and then everything goes back to normal. Never have I seen him have a rash or raised bumps that people typically call Hives. I am wondering if it isn't some type of allergy to foods, spices, medications or his bodies way of releasing a toxin. Is this something you would consider an allergy or could it really be Hives?
