Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes, I am concerned about my son overdosing or accidently taking my insulin I should say. He is 12 and I caught him messing with my insulin. He did not take any however it scared me to death. We had a long talk about it but as a mother I am scared. Kids are so weird these days about trying things.. I explained insulin for a non diabetic is very dangerous.
Hi & Welcome. I appreciate your concern for your beloved son. Yes, it can be dangerous if taken by non-diabetic person.
Insulin is normally required for the uptake of glucose inside the cells to carry out various intracellular functions. It is also essential for survival in patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus and insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
The same insulin if taken in overdose in these patients or in non-diabetics can lead to hypoglycemic (severe fall in blood glucose level) coma which can have varied outcome from complete reversal to death. It can also cause hypokalemia (low serum potassium) level which can cause life threatening arrhythmias.
So, in view of the above explanation, kindly keep the insulin away from the children preferably beyond their reach.
Hope this will help.
