Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.
Getting an inflammation of the
superficial vein during an intravenous injection or drip is not infrequent, and this might give rise to some kind of firm cord like feeling of the vein involved due to
thrombophlebitis giving rise to the discomfort feeling on the part. This is not a serious condition which usually resolves by its own may be with some anti inflammatory and an antibiotic if need be.
However, you have mentioned that it has started to pulse like a beat, which is not natural in such cases. This might signify either a
hematoma (blood collection) of the vein sitting close to an
artery, or a hematoma actually arising from accidental
injury to an artery. In that case, if I were your doctor, I would advise you for a personal clinical review either by me or by your treating doctor to exclude such pathology. The management would depend on the findings of the examining doctor along with the reports of any such investigations if need be.
I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in solving this problem. Thanks for using the healthcare magic forum for your health query. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
