Is It Normal To Get Burning Sensation Above The Incision?

I had an ovarian cyst removed two weeks ago. The cyst was 20cm or 2 litres, and benign as far as I know. My question is: Is the burning sensation above the incision normal? The tender and burning area is swollen and looks like a fat roll the same length as the incision. The incision is horizontal and about 7 inches long. I also broke out in hives on different parts of my body two days ago--I don t know if this is relevant to the surgery. I am 5 1 , 120 llbs and 56 yrs old.

Hello,

As you mentioned on your incision site, you have swelling and burning sensation. To me it sounds like surgical site infection, usually infections happen fewer than 30 days after the incision is made.

Since you said, you just had surgery 2 weeks before he burning sensation. Symptoms of this may include redness and swelling of the incision site, drainage of yellow or cloudy pus and if you had a fever.

Proper cleaning of the wound and taking the prescribed antibiotics could prevent conditions like this.

For my patients, I will prescribe another antibiotic depending on what you took before and give proper cleaning of the wound so I suggest seeing your surgeon since this platform is limited and I won't be able to do a complete physical examination.

For the mean time, please refrain from touching your incision site, if you must, you should make sure your hands are clean. Also, if you are a smoker, you should know that smoking slows down the healing of the wound.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
