Is It Normal To Have Bloating And Tightness Feeling After The Surgery?

I just had an ileostomy reversal on the 16th of December. The surgery lasted five and a half hours due to a lot of adhesions. The left side of my body, where the stoma was, feels very tight and bloated. Is this normal or is the feeling due to new adhesions?

Hi,

Some abdominal bloating or mild nausea in post op phase is very common after ileostomy operation. Its not due to new adhesion. Don't worry as you will resume back to normal and the tightness and bloating will go away. It will take 2 to 3 weeks to settle down fully.

Drink plenty of liquids (6 to 8 glasses of water or juice each day). If bloating is creating a lot of trouble in that case PPI's can be taken in consultation with your surgeon. Eat slowly and only what you can tolerate. Don't take large meals at a time instead spread the meals into small meals taken at interval of 2 hours.

It is also common to have constipation post surgery, mostly attributed to narcotic pain relievers. Lactulose or cremaffin can be taken to pass stools easily. Try to resume back to all normal activities, walk at least 45 minutes a day. Don't worry bloating and tightness will go away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ramesh Kumar
