Is It Ok To Prefill Insulin Syringes For Incapacitated Patient For A One Week Period?
I am a RN working in home health. I have a question about the prefilling of insulin syringes for an incapacitated patient...Is it OK to prefill syringes for a patient for a one week period? My wife is also a RN and she's been a diabetic for 30+ years. I work for a home health agency. My wife says that the insulin in plastic is not as effective over time, that the insulin is absorbed over time in the plastic tubing, making the insulin less effective. That is/was why at one time, we were told that insulin drips were placed in a buretrol and only used for 24 hours before having to change the tubing and the buretrol to continue the insulin drip.
Definately dont store the insulin in prefilled syringes and it is not recommended also. So to overcome that problems now prefilled insulin pens are coming which are use and throw type. After complete usage you can discard it. But as you discuss if you store and keep it definately its efficacy will come down.
Thanks
