Is It Safe To Take Orlistat For Increased Thyronorm?
I had tsh of 6.2. I was given 25 mcg for one month and my tsh is 4.18. my anitbodies, that is, tpo is 239. My doctor has increased my dose to 37.5 mcg and put me on orlistat. I am 32 years old, my height is 5 feet 4 inches and my weight is 69.2 kilos. Is this increase in thyronorm alright? And, is it safe to take orlistat?
Whether the increase in thyronorm is right or wrong can only be told by proper clinical examination and after seeing the normal range for that laboratory. However, in general, TSH is usually kept in the lower side of the normal range, especially if thyroid enlargement is present. So if that is the case, it is generally a right thing to do.
As per the weight and height provided by you, your BMI is around 26 kg/m2. At this BMI, you should be doing lifestyle modifications. I don't think you should be taking orlistat at this BMI. For Indian patients, if BMI is more than 27 kg/m2 and they have some comorbidity in the form of cardiovascular disease or hypertension etc., anti-obesity drugs are to be started.
Regarding interaction of orlistat with levothyroxine, you should separate the two drugs by at least four hours. Taking them together may decrease the effectiveness of the levothyroxine.
Hope it helps....
