Is It Safe To Use Meropenum To Treat Uti In Pregnancy?
im 40 weeks pregnant and have an e coli uti. im not sensitive to any suitable antibiotics except meropenem. i was made aware that there is very little research in to the safe use of meropenum in pregnancy and was offered the choice as to whether i wished to be treated with it. I declined as the dr could not gurantee that it would not harm my unborn baby but am i putting the baby at higher risk because of the infection? i am awaiting my wcc and crp levels today and a decision as to whether i should be induced. I also intend to breastfeed so i still wouldnt be able to be treated immediately after birth with meropenem, will leaving this uti untreated cause long term problems?
If so are so much concerned about the safety of your baby with Meropenum, you may opt for any other alternative antibiotics. Meropenum is β-lactam and belongs to the subgroup of carbapenem.
In fact, during pregnancy, it is preferable to get the culture sensitivity test performed on urine in urinary infection. It will reveal to which antibiotics the causative bacteria are sensitive. Accordingly, the safe antibiotics can be chosen from the list of antibiotics revealed.
Have you undergone this test?
Anyway, please do not ignore urinary infection during pregnancy lest the serious effects on the health of you and your baby. Awaiting till the delivery is not a good option, rather it is a very dangerous decision. Please get it treated ASAP.
