Is It Wise To Continue Pregnancy After X-ray Exposure?
Dear Doctor,
My wife is 5 weeks pregnant (2nd child), before missing last period unknowingly that she is pregnant she was exposed to X-Rays(4-5 times) in two days. now we fear that the X-rays might have afected the development of fetus.
Please advice if the X-rays would have affected the fetus, can we continue the pregnancy and have an healthy child.
we live in Qatar and we consulted Gyn locally but they are not giging an correct answer
they are just telling that "may be the fetus might have affected and you can decide to continue or terminate"
X-Rays have an "All or none" effect at this early a gestation. That is if they had any effect on the pregnancy it would have led to a miscarriage already. So,please do not be worried and continue with the pregnancy. You have not mentioned which X ray was your wife exposed to. If it was chest X ray the field is quite far away from the pelvis .Abdominal x ray are more in the field of pelvis. According to medical evidence, exposure of upto 100 chest x rays will cause a significant amount of radiation exposure of 50 mGray .so one chest Xray causes a radiation dose of about 0.5 mgray only.
Hope this helps. Regards.
