I had mitral valve repair done a year ago. I walked to my room less than 24 hours after surgery and was discharged 4 days after surgery. I went back to work 4 weeks after surgery. I feel better now than I have in years. I am 51 years old and work out regularly. Just don't wait too long. I had no damage to my heart and do not have congestive heart failure. You don't want to wait until your heart has irrepairable damage. Prayer and determination made this procedure much easier than I ever thought it would be.
it is relaxed man, it is replacement surgery but you have to follow certain important things which your doctor can tell you. like blood thinnning medicines, antibiotic prophylaxis, some procedures are to be done with caution. Make sure that you tell every doctor you see that you had this procedure done.
Get a Transoesophageal echo done to know exactly how your valve is now, following that check from the cardiac surgeon whether the valve is repairable. MV repair in a skilled hand is always better than valve replacement. if u'r valve is repaired than replaced then u need not take blood thinning medications. ( NB - only few surgeons in india can do a REPAIR with good results while a MV replacement can be done by any good cardiac surgeon)
