Is The Stiffness And Swelling In The Ankle Due To Sprain Is Normal Or Is This Due To More Blood Flow To The Ankle?

I sprained my ankle two weeks ago and it is still really stiff and swollen. Is this normal? The pain level has definitely decreased and I've been doing "Rehab" exercises that I've been told from prior instances help. I sprain my ankles a lot but it has never been this bad...black and blue from the toes up to about 1/3 of the calf. Also I went back to the gym on monday doing low weight-bearing exercises (bike, rowing machine, some weights, crunches). The initial doctor I went to said when asked that as long as it isn't painful then I'm fine. But after it becoming more stiff the past couple days I got a little paranoid...I thought maybe it was because there was more blood flow to the ankle?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Untreated swelling over the ankle has apparently compressed over the veins and arteries, and thereby, compromised blood circulation as manifested by discoloration of toes, foot and lower leg.

Also, an underlying fracture cannot be ruled out.

Instead of 'home remedies', consult an orthopedic doctor at the earliest, since bluish discoloration of affected limb is NOT a good sign.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
