Is There A Link Between Fibromyalgia And Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

I ve had Fibromyalgia for about 3 years, but can remember when I was very young having the same symptons. I have severe depression, loss of memory and when I speak my words come out all wrong. I am currently taking Savella and Tramadol to help with the pain and depression. Do you think these are good medications? I am currently in therapy and also see a psychiatrist. Also, my sister who is in the medical field received some information on Ehlers-Danlos and a link to Fibrormyalgia. Do you have any information on this? I am 49, height 5 5 and weight 180. I am on several medications for depression and Fibromyalgia. With the Fibromyalgia I have gained about 40 pounds which is very upsetting to me. As far as my history, I explained above I have had Fibromyalgia symptons since I was 10 years old. At that time I was told by a doctor that it was growing pains. Now that I look back I think it had something to do with fibro. I had knee surgery about 10 years ago to align my patellas. When the surgery was performed the doctor found several little tumors. I was told it was synovial chondromatosis. I recently needed my knee drained and x-rays were taken. Again it showed tumors. I do not have any cartilage. I have extreme knee pain and told it was arthritis and nothing could be done except exercise. I also had oblation surgery a couple of years ago and that seemed to be the start of my depression. Doctors have said that would not cause depression. Anyway, that s a little bit about my medical history. My main reason for contacting you is to find out about Fibromyalgia and a link to Ehlers-Danlos. What can you tell me?

Hi,

Yes, there can be a connection to fibromyalgia and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Both affects the muscles while ED affects tendons and ligaments too. The conditions are painful but there are differences. Fibromyalgia has several tender spots on the body and ED affects the collagen of the body rendering muscles, tendons and ligaments weak. You need to do genetic tests with a geneticist.

A good physical therapy regimen will be helpful to strengthen these muscles and thereby decreasing the pain.any medications taken for either fibromyalgia or ED should be effective in giving relief and without side effects. The ideal is managing with the lest number of medications and depending more on exercises, local treatment, hydrotherapy, and so on. Your present medications are generally effective for this condition. Your knee is devoid of cartilage and painful. If this is affecting your daily activities too much then you will need a Total knee replacement.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
