Joint Pain In Wrist, Elbow And Shoulder. Normal Bloodwork. What Could This Be?

I have been having joint pain in my right wrist , right elbow , right shoulder and left wrist. It comes and go though. Recently I have had bad pain in my right wrist and am now unable to bend it. The pain is located on the outside of my wrist where the hand and the arm meet. I m able to bend it upward with sharp pain but completely unable to bend it downward. My primary care doctor did bloodwork to test for RA and inflammatory arthritis . All bloodwork came back normal. What could this be, do I need to see someone other than my primary care doctor?

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in.

Are the joint pains associated with fever ? Any history of stiffness of the joints on waking up in the morning? Your age and gender might give a clue, as some forms of arthritis are more common in a particular age group etc. Any history of joint problems in your family? Does the pain get better with rest or activity?

With the history you have provided so far, I would definitely want to rule out Rheumatoid arthritis. However , you said your doctor has ruled it out. Has an X-ray of the wrist /hand been taken?

Other possibilities are Gout, SLE, Autoimmune arthritis etc.

I would suggest you visit a rheumatologist for an expert opinion. In the meantime, you could have over the counter pain relief medication like brufen after food. Apply hot fomentation over the painful joints.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
