Knee Pain After Hit. Why Can't I Straighten Myself? What Can Heal?
I was playing volleyball and landed on my left leg after a hit, and now there s an extreme pain on the top of my knee . I keep it bent because it doesn t hurt, but when I straighten it there s pain and then if I try to lock my knee, there s a huge pain on the top, so I just go back to keeping it bent. Only the top of my knee is swollen. Did I tear or strain a knee muscle? What can I do to get this pain gone as soon as possible?
If the injury occurred today ,I would say apply an ice pack immediately and intermittently on the affected knee. Take a tablet of brufen 200mg three times a day after food for 2 days. While you are lying down, keep your left knee elevated on a couple of pillows. Get good rest. Do not put pressure on the left knee while walking. Use crutches for a couple of days if required.
Most likely it might be a ligament/meniscus injury. However, you might also want to rule out the possibility of a fracture. In case there is no symptomatic improvement whatsoever after 2 days, I would advise you to visit the orthopaedician and get an X-Ray of the left knee.
Hope this helps.

Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
