Lump On Back Of Knee. Applied Ice, Used Knee Brace. Red Line On Knee Now. Concerned

Hi, My husband had a lump on the back of his knee. It has gone away now, he stayed off it for 4 days, used cold and ace bandage/knee brace. Lately though, although the knee if feeling much better I have noticed on his calf that it is red and fades but also recently has a red line where his sock would hit (top). Is this anything to be concerned about or should we just wait it out? He doesn't want to go to the doctor.

hello,
Thank you for consulting HCM.The swelling behind the knee mostly indicates a bakers cyst which is a synovial fluid filled cavity. Some time this cyst may rupture which is to be treated. After rupture the fluid in the cyst will come down to the calf muscle resulting in redness and swelling in the calf.Which mimics like deep vein thrombosis.Although without rupture one of the complication is also DVT which is a serious complication and need treatment immediately.Ultrasound is done to rule out DVT.Drainage can be done but if it not possible surgery to remove the cyst may be indicated. For symptomatic relief NSAIDs like ibuprofen can be taken but keep in mind that people with asthma, high bloodpressure, kidney failure and heart failure are not supposed to take them so consult you doctor for the correct drugs to be used in your case.Apply ice to reduce the swelling for 10-30 minutes.Important thing is that dont neglect and consult your doctor for sure.Thank you.
