MSAFP Test Results Positive, Advised Aminocentesis. Suggestion?
Hi,my msafp test results have come positive and my neural tube defect risk is 1:28, I am 26 years of age,and have no family history of any kind of abnormality..my doctor did a level two ultrasound which did not show anything wrong with tha baby and everything looked fine...still he s suggesting a amniocentesis ...do you think I should get it done..I am really confused on this...
Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. Well, your risk factor according to the MSAFP test is significantly high. Even though the level 2 scan is fine, there are various syndromes which might not show any ultrasound evidences. Evidence based medicine clearly dictates that you should undergo an amniocentesis. This will conclusively rule out the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities ( again, not all ). There are inherent risks with this procedure, but you have to weigh them against the risk of having and raising a child with a significant abnormality. Do as the doctor advises, and proceed with the amniocentesis. Done in expert hands, it is safer than you fear. Take care.
