Mild Bleeding After Intercourse. History Of Hysterectomy, Bladder Infection. Any Bladder Infection Detection Strips Available?

What is the protocol for paps on women who have had hysterectomies? I realize that the vagina is now 'sealed' so to speak and the cervix gone but isn't there still risk of cancerous cells?
Also, I am having no pain but showing bloody stain when I wipe after voiding. I have had three bladder infections in my life, the most recent about two and a half years ago. Although I am 61, my husband and I enjoy a very active sexual relationship. Are the bladder infection detection strips available at the drugstore otc dependable and is there a therapy available otc that can effectively treat the problem if it is positive? I have moved to a new location and have not found a physician and am a 'cash' customer with no insurance benefits? Advise please?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

After hysterectomy, the cervix is surgically absent. Any study of suspicious cells in vagina is done by vaginal biopsy. Urinary tract infections can be caused by many bacteria. The best way to treat them is by first getting urine culture and sensitivity test done and take medications as per the report. The commonest symptoms of urinary infection are pain and burning during urination. Drinking lots of fluid is also advised along with medications.

Bleeding during intercourse needs to be discussed with your gynecologist as you already have had a surgery.

Hope this helps.
