Mild Tenderness At Jaw Line, Chronic Condition. Will A Dental X-ray Detect The Problem?
I ve had very mild tenderness at the jaw line (left) at about the mid point. I can t feel anything (like an obvious lump) that feels different from the other side. It s just tender. I ve had it for about a year. For a long time, I thought I just bruised myself. But, it s been too long to be a bruise. It s just tender to touch. If there s a problem, would it have showed up on my dental x-ray?
Hi, Thanks for query.
It seems that you might have some problem in your premolars or molar teeth.
Due to carious teeth there migh be chronic infection at root of teeth giving tenderness at mid jaw line.
Consult dentist and get examined. He may go for x ray if thinks proper.
Ok and bye.
Hi,
Thank you for the query.
Tenderness along the jaw line indicates you have problem in the alveolar bone . It could any infection in the gums or teeth extending into the jaw bone and causing pain. Get an OPG done and see your dentist to rule out the exact cause for the pain. Yes, x-ray will help you rule out the cause for it but has to be examined clinically as well.
Hope this information helps you.
Take care.
Hi and welcome to HCM,
After going through your history , i suspect there two possibilities either there is some infection in the premolar or the molar teeth. Infection at the roots of the teeth often radiate pain along the jaw line.
Infected teeth can be treated with root canal procedure and the symptom of pain and swelling can be relieved permanently.
secondly , there can be infection in the gingival tissue leading to pain. This can be resolved by deep scaling and root planing of the teeth surfaces.
so i suggest you to get an OPG radiograph done which will show all the teeth, jaw , adjacent vital structures, periodontal bone loss ,extent of infection . accordingly treatment can be planned by your dentist. i hope this helps you , take care.
Pain can be because of wisdom tooth eruption or can be because of temporomandibular joint disorder. If wisdom teeth are impacted, then it causes pain which may be radiating to the ear and neck and along with that, swelling of the jaws and gums are present. In case of TMJ disorders, pain is present in and around ear which may spread to face and tenderness of jaw muscles is present. In case of TMJ disorders, patient will have pain in opening the jaw wide, chewing and while yawning and along with that clicking sound is present while opening the mouth wide and head ache or neck ache is present. TMJ disorder occurs due to clenching or grinding of teeth or occurs due to malocclusion. Without clinical examination, it is difficult to give definite diagnosis. If it is because of impacted wisdom tooth, then wisdom tooth extraction is required. Before doing the extraction, dentist will take an x-ray to determine the position of wisdom tooth and if pain is because of TMJ disorder, then physical therapy, muscle relaxants and surgery may also be required. You can refer to your oral surgeon.
