Nerve Pain Persist After Having Prescribed Gabapentin. How Much Dose Can Be Increased?

Hi, I've been prescribed gabapentin 300mg three times a day for nerve pain, I am now having some break through pain and will be seeing my doctor soon. My query is how many mg can I go upto? I was at the pain clinic today and spoke to a lady who is on 900mg three times a day. I understand we are all individuals and each case is different I am just curious

Thanks

Hi. As you say very rightly that he doses are adjustable according to an individuals requirements. At the same time the efficacy of a given drug should be compared to the probable side / adverse effects. It has been observed the doses of more than 1800 mg per day in three divided doses has no additional benefit over more than this. And many patients can do well even with very smaller doses. I would advise to discuss this with your treating Doctor, if it is possible to add on another medicine so that the doses of gabapentin be kept at minimum.
