Noticing A Frequent Heart Burn

I am a 42 yr old male who just underwent a left neck dissection, tonsillectomy, and a couple of throat biopsies 25 days ago. I am now noticing that I am getting frequent heartburn, where as before my surgery, I have probably had heartburn like 3-4 times my whole life. Could there be any connection?

Hello,
Heartburn is usually due to inadequate contraction at the level of lower esophagus. Although anatomically speaking, GERD is not related to neck dissection but stress can be a contributor of GERD that you are experiencing after your surgery. Initially better life style habits should be emphasized which includes not having large meals at a time, not eating dinners very late before sleep, using more pillows at night. If it does not resolve on its own after many months, in that case proton pump inhibitors can be considered. In your case, stress management can be important component to deal with.
