Occasional Persistent Numbness/slight Swelling On The Inside Of Bottom Cheek. Anything Of Concern ?

Hello, for the last few months I have had occasional and persistent numbness/slight swelling on the inside of my bottom cheek usually on my left side (sometimes on my right also). It normally lasts for about an hour or two. Its usually after I eat something or brush my teeth . However I do use toothpaste for sensitive teeth. This morning all I had was oatmeal and coffee and its pretty numb. Is this something to be concerned about?

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.
Numbness/slight swelling inside of cheek may be due to-

Deep dental carries associated with teeth
cervical abrasion
gingival recession
impacted wisdom teeth resulting in inflammed pericoronal flap
chronic cheek biting.
Toothbrush injury.
I would suggest you to get a thorough check-up and radiological examination done.
Any anaesthetic gel can be applied on the affected site.
Meanwhile maintain good oral hygiene.
Treatment can be planned based on the investigations.

Take care.

hi klynshoe,
this issue seems to be the case of few reasons ,
1- may be this is gums swelling due to abrasive and hard brush use
2- it can be food allergic reactions causing partial swelling
3- there are chances of allergy to the specific brand of mouth wash.
so you need to observe the actual reason. by improving the oral hygiene you can get rid of this, for detailed answer contact me, regards

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Numbness can be because of several reasons ,occasional facial numbness is usually not a concern , if other symptoms of swelling or pain persists you have to visit a dentists.

Numbness can also be because of grinding of your teeth , which is causing trauma to the cheek . Visit your dentist and get complete examination done . During this examination the dentist will check tenderness of jaw muscles and the jaw joint and look for any missing tooth , broken tooth or poor tooth allignment.

There are several other causes of facial numbness which include Stroke , Bell's palsy ,
Ear infection , trauma to head and face . You can visit a GP & an ENT specialist to rule out the other causes .

Relieve stress if any .

Get complete clinical evaluation of the swelling done as numbness can also be because of the swelling which can be creating pressure on the nerve endings .

Get a panoromic x-ray done .

Eat soft diet .

Maintain a good oral hygiene . Use 0.2% of chlorhexidine mouthwash solution gargles two times a day .

Regards....
