On Campral. Does This Need To Be Taken Forever?

Hi Doctor, I have been on Campral for 12 months. I had a relapse in April, but am still taking campral. I am just wanting to know do I need to take Campral forever with my alcohol condition. I have been abstinent for 5 months before this relapse. I hate this condition and it has caused the breakup of my loving 33 year married relationship with my husband. Marysia

Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

Campral contains acamprosate which is good anti craving drug.

Usually , patient does not to take it for life long. You may consult your psychiatrist before cahnging/stopping the drug. You doctor will weigh the rsik versus benefit ratio ans may help you to decide whether you should continue it or not.

De-addiction psychotherapy, relaxation therapy like breathing exercise may be of good help to you to remain alcohol free and also to remain free from stress.

I hope It will help you.

Thanks.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi,
From your question, after detoxification you were given Campral or Acramposate 12 months back on which you remained abstinent for 5 months and have relapsed but are continuing acamprosate till date.
Now, acamprosate is an anti-craving agent known to reduce the rate of relapse. It is meant to be taken after detoxification to reduce cravings and not along with alcohol though, since it is a safe drug it has no reactions with alcohol. It is advisable you stop the alcohol (you may have to seek professional help for it, depending on the extent of dependence).
About the issue of hating this condition, it is completely under your control and will, it is only about making up your mind. MET or Motivational Enhancement Therapy and RPT Relapse Prevention Therapy maybe of use to you to learn deal with relapse. Medication can help you to certain extent but majority of the work has to be done by you.
Since you say it has caused your life damage, i think you have enough motivation to quit.
Hope this helps,
Dr Anjana rao.
