On Hormonal Treatment For Irregular Periods For 10 Years. How Long Can This Treatment Continue?

i have irregular period my whole life. my physician treated me with hormone (birth control). i read a lot of information and most of the website suggest the hormone treatment can be for women younger than 35yo. i've been treating my irregular period since my 19th and am now 27 (will be in a few months). So, i'm just curious when i reach 35, what i can do to treat myself with irregular period if it is not hormone.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these irregular periods since when you were 19years old that are being controlled with hormonal pills.

Irregular periods that are controlled with pills usually get regularised after using hormonal pills. This occurs because of the immaturity of the hormonal control mechanism. What has to be done is that the drugs have to be stopped after a while on treatment and the cycle observed for a few months to tell whether it has become regular or not. It does in a majority of the cases. We cannot continue treatment indefinitely unless any attempts to get you off this drug has failed. And if this is the case, then other causes should be actively investigated and addressed accordingly.

My advice is to talk with your doctor and see what your periods will look like without this drug. This will help you know what to expect and open the floor for further discussion on why the cycle cannot take control of itself without hormonal pills.

Hope you find this helpful. Please, feel free to ask us more question if they do come up.
Thanks.
