Hi there,

Thanks for writing in.

Do you have any history of migraine?
Any history of migraine in your family?
Do you feel your headache is related to lack of sleep, excessive exercise, direct exposure to sunlight or food intake like cheese and wine. These are normally implicated in the cause of migraine.

If your headache is normally on one side ;unilateral , throbbing in nature , associated with vomiting, flashes of light.... most likely it could be migraine....

A tablet of paracetamol at the start of the headache might provide symptomatic relief . If the headache persists, I would advise you to visit your doctor.

Also, it would be a good idea to get your blood pressure checked as sometimes high BP can also present with headache and vomiting.

In the meantime.....
Sleep at the same time everyday.
Avoid wine, cheese,chocolate.
Avoid unaccustomed exertion.
Drink plenty of water... at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.

I hope I have answered your question. Please do get back to me if you have further queries.

Have a great day :)

Regards,

Hello,

Your symptoms are suggestive of Migraine and it is precipitated just before your periods or when you take up fasting.Treatment of Migraine can be abortive or preventive depending on how often you get these attacks in a month. If headache is not very often (less then 10days in a month) you can opt to take medicines at the time of the attack.Several medications like Acetaminophen, naproxen, ibuprofen or indomethacin can be used. Triptans and Ergots are also useful.

If the headaches are severe and affecting your work or daily activities or occurring frequently you can opt for preventive medication where you take medicines on a regular basis.Several medications like Beta Blockers, Amitryptyline, Doxepin, Valproate, Topiramate are helpful. Discuss your situation with a Neurologist who will guide you appropriately. Also washing your head daily is not likely to be the cause of your headache.

Hope this helps.
