Hi, my name is Kathy and my eye doctor just diagnosed me with optic neuropathy . He claims that this is not the result of anything I did or did not do and the condition will probably worsen. Also, that many times it affects the other eye. I am trying to find out what I can do so that the eye that is affected right now does not get any worse and that it does not affect my other eye. My doctor does not seem to have any answers. Thanks, for your help
Dear kathy, Hi, Optic neuropathy is damage to the optic nerve due to any cause. It may be ischeamic, optic neuritis, compressive, traumatic, infiltrative, mitochondrial, nutritional, toxic and hereditary.Ischeamic may be due to autoimmune disease, HT, DM,glaucoma, hyper coagulable states etc.You need to do some basic test according to the disease.Optic neuritis may be due to viral infection or multiple sclerosis. To rule out MS you need to do brain MRI.Compressive type may be due to tumors and infiltrative may be due to sarcoidosis and metastatic tumor.Nutritional may be due to Vit B12 deficiency and toxic due to methanol poisoning. So you need a complete evaluation and a proper systemic examination to find out the exact cause of optic neuropathy.I request you to take a second opinion from a neoro- ophthalmologist or go to higher center for evaluation....TC ..Dr ajay shankar kar
